5. The Enterprise Became Self-Aware Moments Before Her Destruction

The Enterprise exploded above the Genesis Planet during the events of Star Trek III. Kirk activated the auto-destruct sequence to defeat a group of rogue Klingons. It was one of the saddest scenes of franchise history. And, apparently, not just for the crew, and audience, but for the ship as well.

According to the short story titled, “Countdown,” the Enterprise knew what was happening. The story covers the last ten seconds before the ship's destruction. In it, the Enterprise becomes self-aware. The ship reflects on her existence and is sad about being destroyed. But, the Enterprise prefers dying in battle to being decommissioned.

Noble to the end.
