While Valiant had a history in the Star Trek Universe as the SS Valiant in The Original Series episode "Where No Man Has Gone Before" and the USS Valiant in "A Taste of Armageddon", the name was rejected and the producers ultimately landed on another name with significance dating back to the 1960s.

Ronald D. Moore's second choice of names for the ship, Defiant, had its origins in the TOS episode "The Tholian Web" in which the Enterprise encountered the USS Defiant, NCC-1764.

While DS9's USS Defiant would continue the legacy of the USS Defiant from "The Tholian Web", that ship itself would reappear in Star Trek: Enterprise's "In a Mirror Darkly" duology and would go on to be the center of Star Trek: Discovery's exploits in the Mirror Universe in the episodes "Despite Yourself", "The Wolf Inside", and "Vaulting Ambition".
