In the cold dark of the cosmos, there's life, Jim, but not as we know it.

Space, the final frontier and, as has been reported, a place where no-one can hear you scream.

Despite Starfleet and the wider galaxy's endless quests to voyage into this great beyond, space truly is a dangerous place to be. Beyond the confines of bulkheads and forcefields is an endless expanse of total nothingness. Bereft of heat and oxygen, even the most battle hardened of Klingons wouldn't survive for more than a few seconds.

Despite all of this, in this Universe of infinite possibilities, there are those species who choose to make the expanses between worlds their homes. Whether naturally born or artificially made, these are the creatures who have managed to bring life to the nothingness.

10. Zetarians

Native to the planet Zetar, the Zetarians were once like any other humanoid species. However, whilst humans sought to leave their planet in the name of exploration, the Zetarians were instead motivated by desperation. Hoping to escape their dying planet, the final few hundred Zetarians' plans at departure were cut short by a final cataclysm.

Instead of dying, the doomed humanoids instead found their consciousness shed from physical form, and existed as non-corporeal beings able to explore the galaxy at warp speeds beyond the limitations of their flesh. Such an existence, however, was not one they relished, and the Zetarians began to seek out compatible humanoids which they could possess, living out their lives whilst their hosts became trapped in their own body.

Using their proclivity to a vacuum against them, Scotty & McCoy are able to use the Enterprise's pressure chamber to drive off the hostile entities, but too late for the thousands of species left devastated in their wake
