A pair of civilisations born of two brothers, Krios and Valt, the Kriosians and the Valtese spent hundreds of years embattled after Krios kidnapped Garuth - an empathic metamorph - and took her to the planet that would go on to be named for him.

Empathic metamorphs were relatively common in the males of both species, while they were incredibly rare in women. The audience were introduced to them out of chronological order - first, through Kamala, when she was aboard the Enterprise-D in 2368, then second when Trip Tucker encountered Kaitaama in 2152.

The Kriosians however faced another issue - Klingon subjugation. In 2367, they were effectively under Klingon rule. They were armed by Romulans in an attempt to throw the Klingons into chaos - as Geordi LaForge was kidnapped and brainwashed into an assassination attempt, as the Romulans hoped to pit Starfleet and the Klingons against each other.

The Krios did gain their freedom and even reconciled with the Valtese thanks to the political marriage between Kamala and Chancellor Alrik.
