Star Trek: 10 Worst Things Worf Has Ever Done
6. Letting The Romulan Officer Die
In The Enemy, Worf is asked to donate some of his blood so that a Romulan soldier can live. When Dr. Crusher makes the request, it's clear that she sees this as a formality - of course Worf will say yes, as it's the right thing to do, isn't it? Well, Worf doesn't quite see it that way. Nor, as it happens, does the Romulan.
Worf, though not always the consummate Klingon officer, was the stand-in for the centuries-old enemies of the Romulan Star Empire. While the Star Trek franchise would go on to demonstrate the hatred between these two races, Worf's arc does a lot of the heavy lifting here - in a way that knocks the likability of Michael Dorn's turtle-headed security chief.
By refusing the blood transfusion, Worf is of course well within his rights. Crusher is horrified, knowing that she can't order him to undergo the procedure. His uncaring attitude toward the now certain death of the Romulan shocks her. If anything, in this callous act, Worf shows her that the universe isn't quite the Utopia that Starfleet would have us believe. Does this qualify as one of the worst things that he's done? We argue that yes, it does - not because it's a bad moment of writing, but that it's a moment that shakes the rosy view of the 24th Century to its core.
Well played, Worf.
