V'ger may be one of the largest, most powerful entities ever encountered by the Federation. Originally, the cloud that surrounded V'ger measured at 82 astronomical units in diametre, which would easily engulf the Sol Star System. However, the director's cut of The Motion Picture scaled this back to a more manageable 2 AUs, making it the diametre of Earth's orbit.

While there are many theories, little is truly known of V'ger's exact origin. The probe at the centre, Voyager 6, was launched from Earth but was sucked into a black hole, transported across the galaxy and repaired by a race of machines. The massive cylindrical vessel that surrounded the probe was created to transport it home.

V'ger was sentient, having gain so much intelligence that it effectively came to life. However, it was capable is misinterpretations. It destroyed three Klingon battlecruisers during an attack, but also the Federation station Epsilon IX, which it took as a threat.

The Enterprise was able to travel through the vast cloud to the vessel inside, though it was only through Spock's mind-meld with V'ger that they truly were able to find an understanding between themselves. It took the Deltan Lt. Ilia in an attempt to study and replicate her, to act as a liaison. It retained her memories, allowing further communications.

Its mission to Earth was to give all that it had learned to its creator. With its creator long dead, a new plan was devised. It joined with Will Decker, evolving together to a higher plane of existence and leaving the rest of the ship, and humanity, unharmed - witness to the birth of a new form of life.
