Star Trek Cast: Where Are They Now?

6. James Doohan

Film and television's most famous engineer, Montgomery Scott was the template and inspiration for all ship's engineers for decades. James Doohan was the Canadian actor portraying him in the Original Series, seven of the movies and the Next Generation's episode Relics.

He was a decorated solider, seeing action during the D-Day landings. Though it was friendly fire, he was wounded during these landings and lost the middle finger on his right hand - something that he concealed from shots during filming.

He found himself typecast after Star Trek, but he embraced it. He would visit the fan convention circuits, reveling in meeting the fans. He memorably shared the story of a fan letter he received from a suicidal fan, with whom he entered into correspondence and later discovered had qualified as an engineer.

His health declined in the late '90s, owing to the injuries he had sustained during the war and alcohol consumption. He suffered from both Alzheimner's Disease and Parkinson's Disease in his final years, passing away in 2005.
