Star Trek: Every Chief Engineer Ranked
1. Miles O'Brien
No one suffered more for their craft than Miles Edward O'Brien. As the only non-commissioned officer on this list, technically he ranks the lowers of any of them, yet few of them could hold a candle to him.
Beginning life on board the Enterprise-D, he transferred to Deep Space Nine, where he truly blossomed. Not only were we granted far more screen time, but the character was one of the best additions to the series. Much of the early episodes revolved around O'Brien simply trying to get the broken down Cardassian station to work.
Once the USS Defiant arrived, he also took over the role of Chief Engineer on board that ship as well, making him the only person on this list to hold that role on two locations at the same time. He would constantly face difficulties along the way, as one or both posts would break down just when he thought he was ready.
His skills were clearly evident along the way though, when he was away from the station while on assignment, the station itself displayed how much it missed him by breaking down in various places, not least the turboshafts. No one could quite keep the station spinning like Miles O'Brien.
His combat experience returned to great affect during the Dominion War, allowing him to keep his cool during space fights while he keep the ships running. If there is one person on this list who knows the value of hard work and very little reward, it is this man.
