Star Trek: Every Chief Engineer Ranked

2. Charles 'Trip' Tucker III

Star Trek Chief Engineers
CBS Media Ventures / Paramount Pictures

Trip Tucker was the Chief Engineer on board both Enterprise NX-01 and, for a short time, Columbia NX-02. He is largely responsible for the sustainable operation of the warp five engine installed on both ships, working in the dark for much of the time as he was at the very forefront of space exploration.

Trip was one of the most trusted members of the crew, friendly to all and dedicated to keeping Enterprise running. However, he was unafraid of being the boss, something badly needed on that first warp five ship. Enterprise ran like a submarine in the deep, avoiding enemies while trying to engage friends, never one hundred sure of what would come next.

Far too often it seemed, Trip would have to repair and rebuild parts of the engine. He often voiced his annoyance at this, yet it was clear that he relished the work that he did, ensuring his name would appear in the history books as the first chief engineer on these deep space missions.

His importance in the role was never more obvious that during the Xindi-Earth conflicts. He came from a place of personal pain, having lost his sister to their devastating weapon, though he would eventually manage to put that aside to ensure peace. Along the way, he sustained great injuries - Archer went so far as to authorize the creation and euthanizing of a clone to ensure his survival.

Trip was one of the great adventurers of Starfleet, an innovator and inventor.
