Star Trek: EVERY Chief Of Security Ranked From WORST To BEST

18. Ash Tyler - USS Discovery

If Eddington is at the bottom of the list for being a turncoat, then Ash Tyler has to be right behind him.

To be fair, there is an important distinction. Tyler didn't realise that he was the threat hiding in plain sight. Although maybe that does say something about his instinct...

Things get pretty complicated, but the short story is that Tyler is, in fact, a Klingon called Voq. He volunteered for horrific surgery to look like the real Ash Tyler, a Starfleet officer who had been captured. But to create the perfect sleeper agent, Voq's personality and memories were cloaked with Tyler's, to the point that he had no memory of being Klingon and fully believed he was the real Tyler.

When he was 'rescued' by Starfleet and made the chief security officer of the Discovery, everything was going according to plan...until poor Dr Culber found evidence of the alterations and Tyler-Voq killed him to cover it up.

Should Burnham and the others have questioned some of Tyler's more worrying behaviour? Yes. Did Tyler have doubts and concerns before the truth was uncovered that he should have reported? Again, yes. But is it Tyler's fault that he had this darkness lurking inside of him? No. And can Tyler even be called Tyler? Who knows.

Shades of grey; Discovery's favourite colour palette.
