Star Trek: Every Vulcan Ability You Need To Know

3. Desert Adaptations

The planet Vulcan is a hot and barren world compared to Earth, covered almost entirely by deserts, with a sun that shines on the surface with an intensity that most humans find uncomfortable. There are a few small seas scattered across the world, but nothing compared to Earth.

Evolving in this harsh environment led the Vulcan people into developing a number of natural defences against the environment. Because of the high temperature, Vulcans are much more comfortable in extreme heat than humans, though much more susceptible to the cold. Additionally, as mentioned in The Original Series and Enterprise, they evolved secondary inner eyelids to protect their vision from the harshness of the Vulcan sun.

The planet Vulcan also has a thin atmosphere and very little water, so the species developed an extremely advanced respiratory system to extract as much oxygen as possible, and the ability to go long periods of time without drinking.
