Star Trek Picard: Everything You Need To Know About The Borg

5. A Mother/Borg Relationship

Star Trek Locutus Of Borg
CBS

Seven of Nine is the most important and fully realized Borg character on any of the franchise's series so far. With Locutus, there had been Picard both before and after. But with Seven, there had only been the drone to begin with and all of the slow defrosting led from there. Through her many clashes with the individuals on Voyager, she develops greater freedoms, respect for humanity and crucially, a will to be herself.

Her many relationships combined to make her the character that is now working with Picard and the crew of the La Sirena, but arguably it is her mentoring role to both the Borg children and Naomi Wildman while still serving in the Delta Quadrant that showed the maternal nature within. Much like Hugh, Seven's move toward individuality came in degrees.

While Hugh's journey has been shrouded in more mystery to date, Seven's first few years were on full display. How does an ex-drone adapt? What characteristics survive assimilation? She is shown to be self-conscious at times, hardly unique to an ex-drone, but her quest for perfection remains. This aspect of the Collective never leaves Seven in all of the stories that followed. Naturally, the Borg need to be perfect would extend to parenthood.

The creation of the 29th century Drone may have been accidental but Seven quickly assumes responsibility for him and his development. It is here, contrasted with the stiff and slow newborn, that Seven's journey from Borg to Human is shown. She is a member of the crew. Her search for perfection has become tempered with interactions with others.

She teaches the Drone about individuality and warns him of the dangers of the Collective. Her fears are proven correct when it is the Collective who orchestrate the events that lead to the death of the Drone. Seven is alone again, struggling without the small family she was so briefly a part of. The Collective destroys Seven's family. Twice.
