8. The Dialogue

There are a couple of moments of dialogue in the season when the show goes beyond subtle references and actually delivers a couple of direct (or almost direct) quotes from the franchise, in particular Empire Strikes Back.

The first of these is in episode three, Rise of the Old Masters, when Kanan is training Ezra, and he recites the words that Yoda will later be saying to Luke Skywalker: “Do, or do not, there is no try.”

The second invokes an altogether more sinister message, albeit a line just as iconic. It comes in the penultimate episode Rebel Resolve, when Kanan is being tortured for information by The Inquisitor, and Tarkin tells him: “The Jedi is no good to me dead.” Obviously this mirrors Boba Fett’s famous line about Han.

While having too many of these quotes would’ve been way too on-the-nose, picking a couple of key lines that actually make sense within the narrative is a nice throwback for fans to appreciate.
