Stargate: 10 Times The Show Made Huge Mistakes

7. O'Neill Gets Demoted

By the final season of Stargate SG-1, Jack O'Neill has risen through the ranks. He started life, at least in the Stargate universe, as a Colonel. By the time he meets with Daniel Jackson aboard the Odyssey, he has been promoted to a Major General - equal in rank in fact to Hank Landry, the current commanding officer of the SGC.

A Major General is denoted with two stars on the collar. A Brigadier General, the rank that O'Neill held while in command of the SGC, is denoted with one star.

What stands out in the episode The Shroud is that, throughout the course of the episode, O'Neill goes through quite the career journey! He begins and ends the episode with the correct two stars of the Major General on his collar. However, when he travels up to the Odyssey and meets with Jackson, he is down to one star.

The reason that this stands out is that Stargate was and remains an excellent depiction of the US Military, frequently receiving commendations from the organisation over their positive portrayals. So this, while clearly just a costume gaff, sticks out!

Thankfully, he is bumped back up to Major General again by episode's end. All's well that ends well?
