Brian J. Smith played the lead role of Matthew Scott on Stargate Universe, the eager leader of the group who sometimes struggles to keep the team in check. He quickly found himself drawn to Chloe Armstrong, leading to tensions with Eli Wallace, who also had strong feelings for her.

Outside of the Stargate franchise, Smith had struggled for several years to break into the industry. After appearing in a couple of smaller college productions, he considered joining the army when it appeared as though acting wasn't going to take off.

However, a stint in theatre led to his casting in Stargate, which in turn led to other roles coming along. He won acclaim for his turn in The Glass Menagerie, and would go on to star in the Netflix series Sense8 for its entire run.

Smith publically came out as gay in 2019 in an interview with Attitude magazine.
