Stargirl Season 1 Premiere Review: 6 Ups & 2 Downs
Downs...
2. Sometimes It Takes Too Much Time To Get Going
Though Stargirl doesn't shy away from occasional CW tendencies when it comes to the teen storylines - which makes total sense - the larger-than-life production values and focus on the serialised storytelling highlights that this was always meant to be a DC Universe show. And it works - it really, really works.
That said, the two differing styles don't always gel as well, as light-hearted presentations generally move a little faster. As a result, this pilot essentially conducts itself like a big-budget movie, extending story beats that could have progressed a little bit quicker (and probably will on The CW broadcast version).
This kind of approach would work fine if all episodes were released at once, but the DC Universe's penchant for weekly releases (as if it were a network TV show) might result in viewers occasionally feeling like the story is dragging. Case in point: The pilot very much feels like a first part, concluding before any of the heroics even begin.
It doesn't take away from the story and, in all honesty, it's nice to see some time taken with the plot points, but it probably would have worked a lot better if two episodes had been released instead of one.
