Stargirl Season 1 Premiere Review: 6 Ups & 2 Downs

1. Brec Bassinger Is A Star, Girl

Stargirl TV Show
DC Universe

Stargirl may not be an icon of live-action (yet), but she is a legendary comic book character with a reputation that precedes her, so it goes without saying that 20-year-old Brec Bassinger had a lot to live up to whenever she took on the role. That, however, doesn't phase her in the slightest.

As Stargirl is very much Courtney Whitmore's story, the spotlight remains firmly on Bassinger throughout, following her as she introduces us to a protagonist that is as flawed as she is heroic. And though she is written very well, it's Bassinger that makes it all believable, turning in a performance that is nothing short of star-making.

She does a great job of highlighting the character's buried heartbreak over her father's vanishing all those years ago, but she absolutely shines (literally and figuratively) whenever she begins figuring out who it is that she is supposed to be. Yes, it's easy to see why the Staff chose her.

A strong leading performance but undoubtedly only a glimpse of what's yet to come, Bassinger was born to play this role.
