The question of where Will is in those earlier shots is answered pretty quickly: he's rather unfortunately trapped at the Hawkins Laboratory and subject to experiments to no doubt uncover where he went, what he saw and how he came back.
This is not going to be a happy life for him, and you have to suspect that his "rescue" will play some part in the other kids' main narrative.
