Stranger Things Season 2: What The Ending Really Means

3. But There Might Still Be Someone Evil Interested In Eleven

There's a pretty big loose end that ends up being lost as the show transitions into its episode 7 diversion. When Eleven visits her mother, she stumbles upon her Aunt Becky on the phone suspiciously talking to an unrevealed someone about her niece turning up out of the blue. She seems to be revealing that she's been visited by both Hopper and Eleven.

But who is she talking to? Could this be a completely different malevolent interested party? It certainyl seemed ominous, and it fits with the idea that the government wouldn't just let Eleven disappear into the ether, given her powers. It's not like Becky telling a friend randomly would have been framed like that.

What if it's Dr Brenner? He returned for season 7 in hallucinations, but according to Shawn Levy, he's actually still alive, as 008 confirmed:

“We took a big swing for instance to open the show with a car chase in another city, then Episode 7 goes to another city for an entire episode. Whether or not people feel that episode was entirely successful, the Duffers want to take some swings, and they know that they’re not gonna please everybody. But that feeling of the world getting a bit bigger especially coupled with the fact that it now seems clear that Brenner is alive, Brenner is out there. I for one think that that one scene with Modine and Millie in Episode 7 is one of the juiciest scenes, and it kind of brought me back to how haunting Modine is in that Brenner role.”
