The Big Bang Theory: 10 Things You Completely Missed From Season One

2. Where Did Penny's Balcony Come From?

The Big Bang Theory
CBS

The sixth episode, The Middle Earth Paradigm, has Penny inviting Sheldon's group to her housewarming party. Apprehensive at the prospect of talking to other human beings, the gang decide to go when they learn the get-together is a costume party. Unfortunately, Leonard, Howard, Sheldon, and Raj find themselves unable to connect with Penny's friends and so, are left awkwardly sitting on the couch.

But like Penny's non-existent kitchen in the pilot, there is an inconsistency in this episode that's only noticeable later in the show. While Leonard and his friends are hanging out on the sofa, Penny's friends can be seen chatting on the outside balcony. The problem is... this balcony never appears in the following 274 episodes.

What makes this continuity error more bewildering is how the balcony isn't mentioned in this episode either! So, if it didn't fit into the narrative nor did it benefit the story, why was it included in the episode, only to have it removed immediately after? Although Sheldon has an understanding of the inner-workings of a black hole, not even he can explain what came of this fabled balcony.
