For three seasons, The Big Bang Theory centred around a group of physicists befriending and falling in love with the hot neighbour next door. As that storyline ran its course, the show developed the emotional range of the main group and looked to expand their personal circle.
This development starts to take place properly in season four, another strong run for the show which elevates Amy and Bernadette to the main group. This formed a very different dynamic, allowing the show to take its characters in hilarious new directions. Plus, who ever thought at this point Sheldon Cooper would have a girlfriend?!
While there’s still a lot of focus on Sheldon and Leonard’s friendship, and the conflicting relationship between the latter and Penny, this is where the show begins to utilise its full ensemble cast, with plenty of focus on the other four members of the group.
