The Flash Season 5: 6 Ups & 2 Downs From 'King Shark Vs. Gorilla Grodd'
2. A Worthy Portrayal Of King Shark
King Shark is undoubtedly a sight to behold but he hasn't exactly stunned us all with his great storylines, especially when you compare his run on The Flash to fellow monster and opponent, Grodd. However, that all changed this week.
As we recently mentioned, the metahuman cure played a major role in this week's installment and this ended up complementing the character's journey a great deal. No longer was he just a man-size Shark that would have belonged in any of Syfy's creature features, he had a real tangible goal which ultimately made him a much stronger and more realistic character.
Receiving a taste of human life as Shay Lamden once more, the Earth-2 refugee was grateful to have received the cure as it allowed him to truly open up to Tanya Lamden - the marine biologist who helped him relocate his human mind and the wife of his late Earth-1 doppelganger. The pair's unusual connection quickly became the emotional heart of the episode, with Sherloque playing an integral role in making these lost souls see how they felt about each other, and this made it all the more heartbreaking when Shay volunteered to permanently return to his King Shark persona to save The Flash and XS.
At peace in a glass container of water, King Shark shared a touching moment with Tanya following his triumphant victory over Grodd, and it made us realise that, despite his terrifying appearance, he is still primarily Shay Lambert. He may not have been cured in the way that he hoped, but King Shark is no longer just a warrior, he is a man who knows how to love too and, perhaps more importantly, a well-rounded three-dimensional character that somehow managed to touch our hearts.
