The Politician Season 2 Review: 6 Ups & 2 Downs
Downs...
2. It's Still A Little Too Off-The-Wall For Its Own Good
Expecting seriousness from a political satire would be naive, but expecting seriousness from the same creative team that brought us Glee and American Horror Story would be ridiculous. It's simply not how they do things and that's fine because, most of the time, their way works better. And throughout the course of The Politician, that's evident as the heightened tone plays into the drama much better than it did in the previous season.
That being said, the plot is so dependent on the characters behaving in this ludicrous, off-the-wall fashion all the time that it simply wouldn't move along if they weren't - and that's where even an eccentric show like this begins to beggar belief.
The fact that major plot developments rely solely on one of Payton's loyal characters doing something stupid - so stupid that we've-been-there-and-done-that last season - undermines the effectiveness of it. Moreover, it undercuts the importance of the character development done over the course of the show for no reason other than to just move the plot along. And the characters deserve better than that.
