The Politician Season 2 Review: 6 Ups & 2 Downs
1. It Doesn't Follow Through On A Number Of Arcs
One of the many things that allow us to get invested in any form of entertainment is the promise of character journeys that are both engaging and entertaining. Characters are, after all, the lifeblood of a film or TV series because, without them, there's simply no story.
One of the most frustrating things about The Politician's second season is that it often robs a number of its characters from moments that would ultimately add to these journeys.
It goes without saying that Payton's narrative is handled well as the story admirably never shifts focus from his dream, but there are a number of character subplots that end up abandoned at some point or another.
McAfee's internal dilemma about her toxic friendship with James and Skye gives Laura Dreyfuss some interesting stuff to work with early on, but it only feeds into the forced conflict angle later down the line and inevitably winds up amounting to nothing. The same could be said for the apparent personal problems between Dede and Hadassah that are never explored after the moment that they are actually referred to as 'personal problems'.
The Politician nails the political satire element this time around, but it does feel like it sacrifices some of the deeper character moments to get there, dropping some early on while fabricating others later down the line with no build-up whatsoever.
Now, for the positives...
