The Queen's Gambit Review - 8 Ups & 1 Down

4. It Just Gets Better And Better

Possibly the biggest compliment to pay to The Queen’s Gambit is that the show never really peaks and only continues to build in quality.

The first episode of the series, which centres on Beth’s childhood living in an orphanage, would probably be the series’ weakest instalment. Although, undoubtedly still great, the episode remains a tad slow.

However, really this is actually a good thing, as it means that the show can only improve from there.

And, improve it does - the series only gets better and better, only peaking with the series’ brilliant final episode, which remains the strongest segment.

The only Netflix miniseries that can perhaps hold up to The Queen’s Gambit’s quality is 2018’s The Haunting of Hill House, however, even that series has a weak ending and possibly peaks in its middle episodes.

This is the reason why The Queen’s Gambit remains a real gem in Netflix back catalogue, as it feels like a whole, complete series that is utterly beautifully assembled.
