1. Lisa’s Defence Of Apu
Regardless of where you stand on the whole Apu issue, it’s clear The Simpsons handled it in completely the wrong way. Most people agreed that it was a bit of a mountain out of a molehill, but the show took a very smug and out of character attitude towards addressing the issue.
In a very rare meta moment for the show, Lisa turns to the camera, saying ‘Something that started decades ago and was applauded and inoffensive is now politically incorrect’, ostensibly talking about a children’s book but clearly referring to Apu. If it’s not already abundantly clear what the real point is, Lisa then glances at a photo of Apu.
The thing is though, Lisa is the worst character to address this issue.
Why would Lisa of all people ever belittle someone speaking up for the little guy? You can argue those offended by Apu are just SJWs, but can you ever imagine Lisa calling someone an SJW? She’s one of the biggest ones on TV!
The worst part is, if they’d just puffed out their chest and said ‘we’re not changing anything’, they probably would’ve had a lot of people onside. Using Lisa as a mouthpiece was a real boneheaded move.
