The Simpsons: 10 Biggest Scandals Ever

4. Fighting With George Bush... In Real Life

Everyone knows the famous episode Two Bad Neighbors, where George Bush Snr and Barbara Bush move to Springfield. First Bart, then Homer, get involved in a feud with George, resulting in a fist fight. However, it’s not just random nonsense thrown together for a few laughs: the episode is essentially based on true events.

Beginning in 1990, the Bushes and The Simpsons had been in an eventful back and forth. After Barbara Bush criticised the family (no surprise, given the scandal listed at 9), the Simpsons’ writers wrote her a letter as Marge, explaining that her family does their best and try to live a good, Christian life.

‘Marge’ then received a letter of apology from Barbara, and the matter could have ended then and there.

However, in 1992, George Bush made a speech which included the line that he wanted American families to be ‘more like the Waltons and less like the Simpsons’.

This led to the Simpsons adding a line to Stark Raving Dad that both they and the Waltons were going through a depression, before writing the now legendary episode where the Bushes come to town. The Bush family did not respond further.
