Officially the first Simpsons episode to be animated, but the last one in the first season, thanks to several big animation problems, the tale of the Babysitter Bandit referenced The Night Of The Hunter and Psycho and featured a much-loved guest appearance from Penny Marshall.

Having already established Bart as a force of nature in terms of bad behaviour, the episode introduced an immediate nemesis as karmic retribution for his abuse of baby sitters, and created an enduring villain who sadly didn't share the same longevity as Sideshow Bob.

Still, as first episodes go, this set the bar pretty high.
