The Simpsons: Homer's 10 Best Jobs So Far

2. Inventor - Episode: "The Wizard Of Evergreen Terrace"

Homer has a midlife crisis when Kent Brockman broadcasts a story revealing the average life expectancy for men is 76.2 years. At 39, Homer realises his life is half over and that he has accomplished nothing. He then sinks into a deep depression. Homer then finds out about Thomas Edison through Lisa, and quickly becomes infatuated with him. He gets to work on some of his own inventions after quitting the Nuclear Power plant, such as a shotgun which deploys makeup, a toilet armchair with a hole in it, and an electric hammer, all of which prove unpopular. Later, whilst sat at the dinner table, Homer leans backwards on his chair, which begins to topple over, but is kept upright by a pair of retractable legs that Homer had hammered on and that Lisa claims will save lives. Has Homer invented something useful? D'oh! How It Goes Wrong Unfortunately for Homer, he discovers that Thomas Edison had invented the retractable chair legs years earlier. However, it appears that Edison didn't receive public recognition for the invention, so Homer sets off to the Thomas Edison museum to destroy it with his electric hammer. He has a change of heart however when he discoveres Edison idolized Leonardo da Vinci much in the same way Homer idolized Edison, and puts down his electric hammer and leaves. Both inventions are later discovered at the museum and generate millions for Edison's already wealthy heirs.
