1. Astronaut - Episode: "Deep Space Homer"
After an inanimate carbon rod wins "Employee of the week" at the Nuclear Power plant, Homer becomes dejected and feels unappreciated. Meanwhile, NASA decides to improve its public image by sending a man into space to whom the average American can relate to after seeing their popularity decline. Homer later telephones NASA to complain about their "boring space launches", and NASA realise they have found their man. However, when they arrive at Moe's Tavern looking for Homer, he thinks he is in trouble and blames the call on Barney, only until he realises the nature of NASA's visit. NASA take both Homer and Barney and make them compete for the place as they can only send one of them into space. Barney wins by completing a series of trials and toasts his success with a bottle of champagne, but reverts back to his alcoholic self after becoming sober for the role. The place then goes to Homer.
D'oh! How It Goes Wrong After the launch, Homer smuggles a bag of potato chips on board, which fly out of the packet and float in the zero gravity conditions aboard. The crew fear they will clog up the instruments, but Homer floats about the cabin and eats them all. Later, Homer falls into an Ant Farm, and they too float about the cabin, this time destroying the navigation system. The crew then try to blow the bugs out of the front hatch, but Homer forgets to put on his shuttle belt and is nearly blown out of the spacecraft. He grabs onto the hatch handle for dear life as Buzz Aldrin pulls him back on board, but the hatch handle is damaged, dooming the crew as they are now unable to land. Homer then attacks Aldrin with an inanimate carbon rod, which inadvertently reseals the hatch, and the crew are able to land. Later, the carbon rod is heralded as a hero, much to Homer's chagrin.
