The Streaming Services Your Favourite TV Shows Are Heading To
4. Seinfeld
Is Seinfeld anyone's favourite show any more? Well, you're going to find out just how important it is soon, because Netflix are banking on the show being the right replacement for Parks & Recs and Friends and pretty much every sitcom that's about to be stripped from them in 2020.
The platform is going to have to not make shows like that a priority and focus on what they do best - driving subscriptions through original content. But they also need to make sure their binge model doesn't undo them: they're already getting people signing up, binging entire shows and then not renewing after a month. That's not a long-term model.
It's not exactly a crisis for Netflix, but they're the big losers of the streaming "revolution" because they now don't have a free run at the whole market. At least it might make them less likely to cancel things like Mindhunter.
We'll still get more Stranger Things and more 13 Reasons Why (until it ends in a couple of years) and for now they still have the likes of Breaking Bad and Peaky Blinders.
