The Umbrella Academy: What Does The Ending Really Mean?
1. But They Can't Stay That Way
The twist of the Umbrella Academy becoming kids again is a brilliant one, but it has to be undone in Season 2. While they can get away with having all of the leads being young for a while - and the fact Aidan Gallagher is the standout performer shows it won't hinder the quality - the fact is the adult stars are reasonably well-known, and audiences have become too invested in them for them to simply disappear.
There's still plenty of storytelling potential with them as teenagers, since they'll need to go through time and rewrite a chunk of history. But it also can't be the last we've seen of Ellen Page, Tom Hopper, Robert Sheehan et al. Sheehan and David Castaneda, in particular, are just too good to write out after one season. There is one option to get around that, which would be to have the main storyline focus on the teenagers, and then use flashbacks (or rather, what could be flashfowards if they're in the past) to involve the adult cast, but at some point they're going to need to reset the status quo with regards to the cast.
