It’s a rare feat for any TV spin-off or prequel/sequel series to match what has come before, but it’s fair to say that The Originals managed to be just as good as its predecessor, The Vampire Diaries.
Premiering in 2009, The CW’s adaptation of L.J. Smith’s The Vampire Diaries book series proved to be an instant hit with genre fans. Headed up by the likes of Nina Dobrev, Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley, the show managed to put together a rather impressive 171-episode, eight-season run by the time it wrapped up in 2017.
Of course, it also managed to be the launching point for The Originals, which spun off to centre on the Mikaelson family – particularly Joseph Morgan’s Klaus.
The Originals may not have had quite the run of The Vampire Diaries, yet it amassed a steady five seasons. Managing to be its own beast, yet still being very much in the same vein as The Vampire Diaries, in some ways The Originals took what had worked previously and elevated it to an entirely different level.
