This was perhaps the least subtle mind game Negan put forth, but by far the most effective.

Smashing in the heads of your loved ones can really make you submit to your tormentor's will. The whole situation was dragged out just long enough to have every single member of Rick's group shivering and shaking with terror.

While Negan's demeanour would make one think he is an intelligent, calm, and rather easy-going guy, the way he handles a bat tells a different story. He brought his bat, Lucille, down on the victims' heads once and then let them bleed and suffer, and even more importantly, he let the others watch their loved ones bleed and suffer. After letting the victims hover and sway for a while he goes berserk and brings the bat down multiple more times, making a pile of mush of Abraham and Glenn's heads.

They all knew then: Negan could be fun, talkative, and understanding, but when wronged or betrayed, he wouldn't hesitate to dish out some severe punishment.
