Some people believe the events from The Walking Dead could be heavily-based on religion. Demonic possession has been whispered about on some forums, though others claim it could be based around the rapture and the end times. There are plenty of references to religion and spirituality throughout the show, including Father Gabriel, who could be struggling to deal with the fact that he has been 'left behind' on Earth rather than being raptured. It would explain a lot of his breakdown, and fits with the biblical timescale of those left on earth for a period of suffering afterwards. It's an interesting one to consider.
