Ezekiel occasionally ran the risk of appearing over-the-top and cartoonish, especially in his first seasons. But thanks to the performance of Khary Payton and the King’s undeniable likability and humour, he never strays too far from the tone of the show.

On paper, he should never have worked. An animal lover turned king of a small community and owner of a pet tiger - none of it seemed like it should fit. But watching Ezekiel rule the Kingdom, fall in love, and lose his home was absolutely extraordinary.

The death of his son and his cancer diagnosis means he's currently going through an awful lot, but this dismal development has only cemented him as a compelling creation destined to fight until the very end.
