The Walking Dead Season 11 Review - 6 Ups & 2 Downs From "Variant"

4. Up - Princess Protecting Eugene

The Walking Dead Variant Eugene Daryl
AMC

She may have only been around since the tenth season, but Juanita Sanchez (also known as Princess) stood out with her colourful attire and sense of humour. Not given as much screen time this season, she finally got some good scenes this week.

After Eugene and Max are on the run and hiding following their exploits in last week's episode, Princess confronts Mercer after her interrogation and stands up for Alexandria's former engineer, knowing that he is a good person. Having a heated confrontation with her lover, she questions him and the rules of their society.

Returning to screens this week, Paolo Lázaro brilliantly brings back Princess with a great performance as she publicly stands up for someone she knows to be good and puts someone as intimidating as Mercer in his place. Building on her character's backstory, she makes her a more sympathetic character who cares for her friends more than some ay has realised, despite their lack of screen time together.

Demonstrating her awareness of what makes people good or bad also sets up an emotional exit for her as her faith in the Commonwealth has faded and can no longer stay somewhere where the people don't protect one another.
