The Walking Dead Season 8: 8 Things You Might've Missed In Episode 1

2. “This Is Your Show"

The Walking Dead Michonne Carl Rainbow Cat
AMC

This is what Michonne says to Carl as they stay behind to run things at Alexandria. It's a line taken from Andrea in the comics, a sign of Michonne taking her story, but also a hint of what's to come for Carl.

Carl has never been trusted with leadership before. Although he is now getting older, the traditional hierarchy of The Walking Dead would suggest that Michonne would take charge.

The language seemed very deliberate, not really about internal leadership at all. The use of the word “show” pointed towards Carl replacing Rick as the main character of the series, following the time jump that is expected to happen at some point this season.

Rick made it clear that he envisages passing on responsibility to Maggie after the war with Negan, but this does not mean that she has to be the focal point of the show. Carl has a lot of growing to do as a character and, with the right support, can take the series forward.
