The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live Review - 8 Ups & 2 Downs From "What We"
4. Up: The Clever Visual Storytelling
Although there's a lot of talking in this week's episode, which almost watches like a play at time, there's also a remarkable amount of visual storytelling at work, too.
Take the first walker attack. Banding together to take the undead down, Rick and Michonne find themselves unable to communicate properly or work as the team they once were (slightly odd, granted, considering how well they worked together last week, but anyway), and after they've reconciled it all comes flooding back to them.
There's also the mid-point love scene, which finds them at their most connected, as they tenderly help each other be intimate again after so many years apart. It's a touching, romantic scene, one that highlights just how much they've changed, but also how much they still need each other.
That each of these moments of physical contact and communication follows a moment of fraught arguments and slow steps to reconciliation works well to symbolise how Rick and Michonne grow close together the more they confront themselves and each other. By episode's end, we're back to being the Richonne we all know and love.
