For all of Mulder and Scully's investigations, they have come up with little in the way of irrefutable proof of the unexplained, yet here it is, clearly in Mulder's grasp. The truth is no longer out there, it's here, in the lab. In a specimen jar, waiting to be examined by the greater scientific world at large. So of course this momentous occasion is promptly forgotten. Mulder pretty much looks surprised, nods, and moves on with his investigation. This is why you leave the hard evidence gathering to Scully.
