Trese Netflix Review: 9 Ups & 2 Downs
10. Down: Crowded Exposition
Largely due to the previous issue of pacing, the lack of time means that the answers to overarching mysteries are dropped heavily and all at once in the last episode.
The way things are laid out in previous episodes feels natural, with exposition that doesn't feel forced or overfilled, and a story weaving past and present together in a way that feels mysterious but intriguing. In contrast, the final episode's explanation, which is said all at once by a single character, takes up most of the runtime and goes just a little too long to feel as earned as mystery reveals from other noir titles.
On a more positive note, however, the exposition of the world itself and the way the series brings you into an unfamiliar environment works much better, with a lot of the explanations framed as the important lessons Trese learned in her youth being enacted in her dangerous day-to-day.
The series does well to balance an impressive amount of lore, though with the time it was given, at least one exposition dump too long was all but guaranteed.
