Like the occult horrors investigated by its characters, True Detective seemed to come out of nowhere. HBO picked the show up on the basis of the first script, which was written by a little-read author whose only previous TV work was a couple of episodes of the much-maligned US version of The Killing. Looks can be deceptive, however, as the writer in question - Nic Pizzolatto - had been building up a cache of influences and great characters, and the end product was helped no end by the cavalcade of cinematic talent who helped bring them to life. Now that it's here, though, it doesn't look like it's gonna go away. Since the first season we've been haunted by True Detective (much like, yes, the occult horrors investigated by its characters); by the performances of Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, the well-drawn characters they played, the sumptuously spooky visuals, and the engaging murder-mystery at the heart of it all. It seems slightly unfair that we only got eight episodes of it, because we tend to be pretty entitled when it comes to our HBO crime dramas with supernatural undertones. So, in place of having new episodes of True Detective to watch, we've began to obsessively follow each and every single rumour and tease of information about the next batch of episodes. Due to start filming later this month, before premiering in of summer 2015, concrete details have been fairly thin on the ground - but speculation is rife.
