Vikings: 8 Most Insane Fan Theories

7. Athelstan Is In Valhalla

Vikings Floki
History

This is a delightful, yet improbable theory. Athelstan was a real highlight of the series, as his strong moral compass and conflictions over his Christian and Pagan beliefs made him a very conflicted and interesting character. However, it always felt like he was on borrowed time with the Vikings, as his Christianity was a great source of conflict. Eventually, his time with the show culminated when Floki killed him to end their long and bitter relationship.

It would be safe to assume that Athelstan would travel to heaven post-death, seeing as the character was reborn in the Christian faith just before his demise, but one theory claims that to be a moot point.

Some fans are convinced that the character played by George Blagden now resides in the Viking afterlife of Valhalla. The proposed evidence for this comes from Ragnar's season three vision, where he sees Athelstan and a figure who resembles Odin, causing many believing that they must therefore reside together in the Norse afterlife.

Of course, it's improbable that Odin would accept a devout Christian into his halls, but perhaps his connection to Ragnar and the Viking world would have made him an exception. It's rather unlikely, but still lovely to imagine the monk and his best buddy Ragnar being reunited after their deaths.
