22. Ivar The Boneless

History

Ivar the Boneless was the eldest son of Ragnar Lothbrok. His name is believed to have been due to either a brittle bone disease, the inability to walk, impotence, or a mistaken translation that was supposed to be 'the Hated'.

Either way, like the show he commanded the Great Heathen Army in 865 AD. This was a huge army of multiple Viking clans that came together to raid the kingdoms Northumbria and East Anglia. He also gained control of York during this. Some say the attack was revenge for the murder of Ragnar.

After this he went to raid Scotland for a while with the Viking King of Dublin, Olaf the White. They returned to Dublin and Ivar took the title 'King of the Norsemen of all Ireland and Britain'. He died suddenly in 873 AD of unexplained causes.
