The Walking Dead: 15 Best Zombie Kills (So Far)
12. Rick Improvises ("What Lies Ahead")
Season two doesn't get off to a great start for our merry little band of survivors. T-Dog is wounded, Shane is plotting and Sophia is so spooked by some Walkers that she runs away into the forest. To his credit, Rick immediately races after her. He finds her quickly enough, but they are closely pursued by two Walkers. Rick soon becomes winded by trying to run while carrying a 12-year-old, so he leaves her to hide in a crevice in a creek bed while he distracts the zombies. On his own and having lost his rifle in the chase, Rick picks up a huge rock and uses it to smash in the head of one of the Walkers. When the other appears behind him, Rick just gathers his strength and heaves it one-handed into the Walker's face. Why It's Great: At this point in the series, we hadn't seen many well-lit solo zombie kills that weren't done from a distance by gun or crossbow. Here, we see some messy conflict in very close quarters. Rick is completely exhausted and stuck without backup or conventional weapons, so he makes do with forest debris to save his own life and theoretically that of a frightened 12-year old girl. Also, there is some pretty satisfying rock vs. zombie crunching.
