YOU Season 3: 9 Exciting Fan Theories
3. Forty's Movie Exposes Joe
Some people, such as Candace and Love, were able to figure out the truth behind Beck's memoir, The Dark Face of Love, and how it basically lays out all of Joe's crimes. When Candace enters Forty's life under a false identity to torment Joe, she introduces Forty to Beck's book which he sets to adapt into a screenplay.
To Joe's dismay, he gets caught up in writing it with Forty (and Ellie, who sits in as a "writing assistant"). After they establish something is missing, Forty asks Joe how he thinks it's possible that Dr. Nicky hid his sociopathy for so long, and Joe says: "Why does he have to be a sociopath? Maybe he's a man who would do anything for love."
Forty eventually realises that Beck's killer wasn't Dr. Nicky, because this wasn't sociopathy after all: "It was a crime of passion by someone who loved her." He goes on to explain that Beck casually mentions a nameless ex-boyfriend a few time in the book. "He seems harmless. But he murdered her in a jealous rage and he framed Dr. Nicky."
This is all true. If Forty was able to finish his screenplay adaptation with these adjustments and hand it to the producer before he died, then it could potentially cause trouble for Joe if anyone decides to run with it.
Ellie might still have a copy of screenplay too, and by the end of the season she also knows what Joe is capable of. Plus, there's always Dr. Nicky and those fighting his corner, who will be able to use the screenplay/movie to add more depth to his innocence.
