Rob Van Dam was Eddie Guerrero's first programme when he returned to the WWF in April 2002. Latino Heat had name-dropped Van Dam as a preferred opponent earlier in the year during an RF Video shoot interview, and they no doubt matched up well on paper.

Besides, it was a natural rivalry since neither had wrestled each other before, both used the Frog Splash as a finisher and RVD was the Intercontinental Champion, a title a wrestler the calibre of Eddie should have been gunning for. Their first match was at Backlash, with Eddie winning a good (albeit one-sided) affair to claim the gold.

The two would clash off and on over the next month until things were settled for good on the May 27th episode of Raw, with the two men squaring off in a Ladder Match main event, IC Title on the line. It was a gimmick match that certainly suited the styles of both.

Eddie tried neutralising Van Dam's legs in the early going, battering them with a steel chair so that he - in theory - wouldn't be able to climb the ladder. Van Dam worked through the pain though, and retaliated with gusto. There were some incredible moves in this one, including a sunset flip powerbomb from the top of the ladder from Guerrero to RVD, a Rolling Thunder on the ladder, a slingshot hilo over the top of the ladder and much, much more.

Adding to the excitement, a (moronic) fan jumped in the ring and pushed Eddie off the ladder! Luckily, Guerrero was able to land on his feet and the match continued until Van Dam won by kicking Eddie off the top turnbuckle to the floor.

He'd originally planned to Frog Splash Eddie from the top of the ladder, but fate intervened and one of the rungs buckled causing him to lose his balance and fall. Moments like that took nothing away from the action, though, and in fact added to the feeling that anything could, and probably would, happen out there.
