10 Amazing Rob Van Dam WWE Matches
8. Vs. Steve Austin Vs. Kurt Angle (No Mercy 2001)
One month after tearing it up with Chris Jericho, the ever-popular Hardcore Champion was inserted into the feud between Steve Austin and Kurt Angle. This led to a triple threat match over the WWF Championship at No Mercy, Van Dam's first WWE pay-per-view main event.
It probably would have been another Austin versus Angle singles match, as had been the case at SummerSlam and Unforgiven, but Mr. PPV's crowd reactions pretty much forced him into the equation. The Invasion angle gets a lot of stick, and rightfully so, but if there was one real positive coming out of it it's the elevation of Rob Van Dam.
Things got off to a quick star, with Angle cleaning house by suplexing everyone and their mother before the Alliance men began to work together in order to take out the Olympic gold medalist. That allegiance didn't last long, however, and soon the so-called stablemates would go at it with one another.
Austin took over, wearing down his opponents before Van Dam came from out of nowhere with a crazy dive from the top rope to the floor. Angle nearly won it with a bridging German suplex and Austin almost sneaked it with a Stunner, but both covers were broken up as the intrigue grew.
Big moves continued to be traded as the fans got more and more into it before the inevitable McMahon interference, with both Shane and Vince coming down to ringside to help 'their' guys. Eventually, after some shenanigans and about six German suplexes and an Angle Slam, Austin was able to hit the Stunner on RVD and regain his championship.
A great effort all around. Three ways are hard to do, but they kept the psychology simple and turned in a satisfying performance.
