WCW pay-per-views were fairly predictable in their unpredictability. The shows were almost always headlined by nostalgia acts hot-shotting a once-prestigious title into oblivion, while the undercard was usually punctuated by underused wrestlers and miserable finishes. Throw in unlimited ref bumps and outside interference, and you've got yourself a WCW show.

There was almost always at least one excellent cruiserweight match, usually a random multi-man or singles bout with little build and masses of excitement. The best example of this? Juventud Guerrera vs. Blitzkrieg at Spring Stampede in 1999.

You might assume that this 10-minute banger would be all flips and dives, but you'd be wrong. Sure, there is plenty of aerial magic throughout the match, but there is plenty more to this than incredible athleticism. The match slowly builds to a quite thrilling crescendo, Blitzkrieg hitting a series of increasingly dangerous moves before dancing a little too close to the edge, getting caught in Juvi Driver position on the second rope. Three seconds later, it was all over.

WCW history is littered with great cruiserweight matches and memorable junior heavyweight moments, and this opener deserves all the plaudits in the world. There was more to the vanilla midgets than dives and twirls, that's for sure.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
