10 Awesome WCW Moments You Forgot

4. Who Are You To Doubt El Dandy?

The less said about Bret Hart's WCW run, the better. The Excellence of Execution made the jump in acrimonious fashion and that was about as good as it got, save for an excellent match with Chris Benoit in unhappy circumstances. Hart's debut was botched and it largely went downhill from there. WCW just didn't know how to book the best wrestler in the world at the time, which tells you all you need to know about WCW in the late '90s.

In fact, it says a lot about how Hart was booked in WCW that his best promo was a tongue-in-cheek knock at El Dandy, of all people. It was the beginning of 1999, just over a year into Hart's run, and he had already turned heel. The Hitman had been told to defend his United States Championship at SuperBrawl as well as taking on Booker T in a non-title match that night on Nitro, but Bret was keen for the unheralded stars to get a little bit of the spotlight.

Namely, El Dandy.

"El Dandy, I think you're a heck of a wrestler, you're a great technician in the ring and you're a jam up guy"

'Mean' Gene Okerlund took exception to this, of course, reminding Hart that Dandy was a cruiserweight wrestler. The Hitman's comeback will live long in the annals of pro wrestling.

"Who are you to doubt El Dandy?"

Magnificent.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
